Children and Families

We believe in encouraging children to be part of our worship at their own level and in their own way. This means that they are part of the entire service, and do not leave for separate Sunday School activities. This practice calls (and challenges) us to worship as a family in Christ, welcoming people of different ages and abilities into our community and respecting everyone as a gift to the community.

We believe that each person is a gift of God, called to contribute to and enrich the experience for others in worship. We believe that in an ideal world, the children should be in our midst in as many ways as is practically possible. We are continually testing this ideal against the reality of differing and sometimes conflicting ideas, ideals, customs and traditions in our community of worshippers, but we are passionate about making it work.

We are exploring and experimenting with different formats and are continually looking for new possibilities and opportunities, creating an exciting environment where the gospel can come alive in a variety of ways. Some examples of this are projecting a story on a screen, using drama, arts and craft projects, imagery and, lately, derived from the godly play method, working with story telling boxes and other means of sharing the story.

Wooden ‘Play’ Church

During the year, several services are held that are more focused on young families in terms of their set-up, content, music and use of language. On the Wednesday before Christmas, a family Christmas celebration is held with contemporary music, drama and a picnic dinner.

At both the Christmas and Easter morning services, additional activities for children are prepared, including extra songs and stories for children. An Easter egg hunt is also held for the children on Easter Sunday. On Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Pentecost Sunday, activities are organised to interest our younger Church attenders.
