North Balwyn Uniting Church places a strong emphasis on mission and service to the community.  We encourage members to address and support the needs of people in the Church and the wider community, both locally and overseas.

Chaplaincy in Schools

NBUC provides regular support and funding for chaplaincy at Balwyn High School.

‘Good Grub’

‘Good Grub’ is an activity of Uniting Care Community Options, providing a midday meal at Highbury Grove Uniting Church, Kew each Tuesday.  Staffed by about 30 volunteers on a roster basis, it also provides counselling when required and a food bank.

Immanuel Choir

An interdenominational choir with members from a number of different churches throughout the metropolitan area and beyond.  Performances are held at a number of Aged Care facilities and concerts are performed in churches to raise money for various charities.

Kondanani Zambia – Donated Goods for Zambia

Kondanani Zambia Inc. is an Australian-based Not-for-Profit Incorporated Association that focusses on supporting children who are disabled, orphaned and vulnerable in Zambia. Its founders, Jenny and John Preston, have been involved in Zambia since 1992.

Jenny and John Preston have been receiving ‘in kind’ donations for Kondanani Zambia since 2010, including blankets, computers, knitted goods, dressmaking material, hand tools, sewing machines, clothing, library books, spectacles, hearing aids and school requisites.  Containers of donations were shipped to Zambia in May, 2012.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) Fresh Water Project

The PNG Fresh Water Project is an activity of UnitingWorld, in conjunction with the United Church of Papua New Guinea.  The Project assists in reducing the level of poverty in selected villages through the provision of safe, sustainable water supplies.  Funds are raised for this Project at the ‘Mind, Body, Spirit’ series on the last Sunday evening of each month, and at an annual appeal.

Pastoral Visitors Group

A group of committed members makes regular visits to frail and aged members, or people recovering from medical procedures or ailments.

Sammy Stamp Group

The Sammy Stamp Group is part of the UCF (Uniting Church Fellowship) fundraising effort, which has raised thousands of dollars for Missions by trimming and sorting used stamps. The Group welcomes your occasional, regular or at-home help.   Stamps may be left at the Church.

School Music Festival

A choral and band festival held twice yearly with 9 local participating Primary Schools.

Spectacles for Vanuatu

An annual collection of spectacles supporting the Uniting Church Eye-care project in Vanuatu and Fiji.

Sunshine Mission

Sunshine Mission – based at Sunshine Uniting Church – offers assistance to the many needs of a diverse population, many struggling with unemployment and financial problems.  It runs an Opportunity Shop and café, as well as a Men’s Shed.

Baskets are placed in the entrance to the Church to receive groceries and toiletries, and these, together with donations of toys, clothing and blankets, are transferred monthly to Sunshine Mission.

‘Wrap with Love’

Knitters amongst the congregation knit squares for the Wrap with Love organisation, which are then made into rugs and distributed to those in need.
